Migrating BPM Applications from Legacy FileNet (Panagon)

One of the nation's largest insurance providers, a long-time FileNet customer, had used the earlier versions of FileNet product (Panagon) to develop over 40 workflows across three different systems.

The client had decided to move to the new P8 BPM product. However, the existing workflow custom applications were such a critical part of their business that they could not afford any downtime in the process of migrating to the new environment. The only possible solution with zero impact to business was to migrate the “live” work items from one system to another.
The client had a very experienced team of internal FileNet resources. The main issue was not the install and data migration. They needed a migration tool that would allow them to migrate “live” work items from an older system to the new one and be able to preserve the state and allow for any mapping/variations from one environment to another. Also, they wanted reporting that accounted for all items that were transferred. A very challenging requirement that was first presented to the FileNet Professional Services and a number of other partners. The response was either no interest, or quotes that far exceeded the budget for the project.
The client was referred to one of our senior consultants that specializes in doing application migrations. The requirements were outlined and after careful review and a small sampling, it was determined that such tool can be developed in 4-6 weeks. The IT team was able to use the tool within a few days of training. Using additional block hour support from our senior conversion specialists, the three different systems (over 40 workflows) and close to 30,000 work items were migrated from Panagon to BPM in a few months. The project was a major success meeting customer’s expectation for time and budget.
